Introduction to Brandt's and Hoach's Alpine Dairy Goats

Thank you for visiting the herd via the website! The goal of the website is to hopefully give you some insight into the animals, their quality, as well as answer basic questions about the herd.

The Brandt’s/Hoach’s herd is a partnership between Leslie Schaffer and Randy Hoach. The herd resides in Norco, California in Southern California’s Riverside County about 50 miles NE of Los Angeles. When Randy originally dispersed the herd, many of the top animals went to Leslie including the doe who was to provide an extremely solid background, and matriarch, GCH Hoach’s SRS Lyric 4*M. We don’t own a doe that does not go back to her several times.

Although Randy was absent for a very short period of time, he always helped with breeding and would come to the farm for a "goat" fix. When Randy's career became a little less demanding, the partnership was born.  Between the two of us we have over 40 years combined of breeding exclusively Alpines!  The partnership has worked well with Leslie overseeing the majority of the day-to-day management and has proven her expertise in keeping the herd healthy.  Leslie is a master at keeping the herd in show condition-no easy task.  Randy has many years of successful breeding behind his Hoach’s Alpine herd and can be credited with 2 National Champions, Premier Breeder and Exhibitor at the National show level, as well as National Show Premier Sires, bucks that have sired National Champions etc.  The efforts of the Hoach’s Alpines genetics can be seen in many pedigrees of animals owned by top breeders throughout the country.  So it made sense to give Randy the job of breeding and selection.

Our goals are to breed Alpines that are competitive at the National Show level, correct and consistent in their type and their ability to reproduce that type. We prefer an Alpine that is a bit different than the conventional Alpines of the 70's and 80's. We put a lot of emphasis on the extremes, and breed for animals that are long, tall, typey and show consistent uniformity in sound structure/General Appearance. We breed for animals that are long lived, productive and mature in a natural progression relative to age, and get better as they get older.

The 2010 show season was practically non existent, but the few shows we attended were extremely rewarding.  Personal commitments prevented us from showing the does as much as we would have liked.  The highlights of 2010 were finishing the GCH status on Heredity and earning two GCH legs on Splendor (we just ran out of shows!).  Both of these does also received BDIS honors.  Another 2yr. old, Kriteria, has emerged as a doe to give her two half sisters an occasional defeat.  We continued with DHIR testing and you will note that lactations are not complete at the time of this update to the website. We will be happy to give you information on any individuals that you may inquire.  The majority of the mature herd is projected for over 3,000lbs as individuals with several well exceeding the 3,000lb. club.  Most of the does however, will be dried off prior to the 305 day lactation projection. Please don't hesitate to inquire about milk records if they are not given or mentioned.  We are extremely pleased with the productivity and milk yield of our does!

Although the plan is to eventually have our does linear appraised, none of the does listed have been appraised at this time and for those of you who place a special emphasis or importance on the linear program and appraisal scores as selection criteria, you need look no further. The linear appraisal system as it is today has many merits and for many is a profound learning tool; however we are concerned over the high numbers of "Excellent" scores given. In addition it seems to us that the value in many using the program is more in the advertising by its users rather than the tool that should help us to breed better Dairy Goats. No appraisal system is perfect, and we realize that but considering our take on the program we just have not rushed out to get the job done.

Kids are raised on a dry lot situation with full CAE prevention methods strictly enforced. They receive pasteurized cow colostrum at birth and pasteurized goat milk subsequently. We test for CAE annually using Washington State. Our herd is on the Scrapie Eradication program and has tested negative for CL as well.

All orders for kids are taken on a first come first served basis.  A deposit of $100 will hold the kid of choice until birth at which time the buyer is notified and the balance is due shortly after.  Your deposit will be refunded if the kid of your choice or similar agreed upon substitute by buyer is not born. Airfare, Health Certificate, and Crate are the buyers’ responsibility.  We ship out of Ontario International Airport in Ontario, California and transportation to the Airport is free of charge. The majority of the kid crop is offered for sale to keep the herd at a manageable size and to fit the ½ acre that they are raised on.  Buck kids are only kept if pre-ordered.  We reserve the right to 20 straws of semen at the cost of collection on any buck kids sold.

Kids are guaranteed CAE and CL free, however once out of our hands, and because we cannot control the environment in which they are raised, nor rearing or housing methods, kids that test positive after 6months of age will not be replaced or refunded.
